A New Year, A New Day

Inaya Day Rings In 2018 with ‘Over Me,’ Her Duet with Ultra Nate

2018 is starting off with a bang as house music legends Ultra Naté and Inaya Day join forces on the New Year’s hottest collaboration, “Over Me.” With music and lyrics written by the two dynamos, the song mixes ‘70s disco with modern-day vibe for an over-the-top electronic groove that will have you waving your arms in the air and shaking your booty on the dance floor.

Ultra and Inaya will perform it live at the “Over Me” release party taking place at Le Bain at The Standard, High Line, on Friday, January 12. But, if you can’t wait until then, you can get your Inaya fix a little earlier when she helps ring in the New Year with a performance at Monster Bar on New Year’s Eve.

2017 was a tough year, both politically and with widespread terrorism. Do you still believe, as you sang in your summer hit, that “love is in the air”?
Yes it is! Love always wins. More and more people are realizing that the little things do not matter and that we need one another to survive it all. More countries are becoming diverse. More people are marrying interracially. There are more large-scale celebrations. There is more acceptance. Those things invoke and show love.

How should we approach 2018?

Love is always the way. Love other people just as you’d want to be loved. Love them through their differences and their troublesome ways. You never know what a person is dealing with on the inside, and just a simple smile can change someone’s day, while an act of kindness can change someone’s entire life—even save it!

Did you feel the love from fans this past year?
I sure did. And I appreciate it, because these are tough times in the music industry, too. I implore fans, if you love music and your favorite artists, support them. Go to their shows, buy their music, meet and greet them, connect with them. Exchange positive energy with them. Hip other people to the music that you love. Just like love, music is universal. Spread them both!

You had another big hit in 2017 with “One Night in Heaven.”
I love “One Night in Heaven”! It’s my love song to God. I’m a true believer in God and that God is love. So, in this song I sing about how bad things may happen, but God will always help me to win over them. And for that, I’m thankful.

Is it true that you recorded the song for your friend, DJ Grind?
Yes! He’s my buddy, and he had recently lost his grandmother and wanted to make this record in dedication to and remembrance of her. When he asked me to sing it, I jumped at the chance, because I’ve loved the song since its release in 1993. It takes me back to my first European tour with the Harlem Gospel Singers when its video was on constant rotation. This song will always hold a special place in my mind and heart.

Will you perform both songs at Monster?
If the people want to hear them, I’ll sing them!

What about the new single, “Over Me”? Will we get a sneak peak at Monster, or do we have to wait until the release party at Le Bain at The Standard, High Line, on January 12 to hear it?
Hmm…you’ll have to come to the Monster to find out!
