SHE MAY BE THE WIFE OF PARTY ROCKER, ANDREW W.K., BUT WHEN IT COMES TO MAKING PARTY MUSIC, CHERIE LILY ROCKS TO HER OWN BEAT.
Her new single “Kiss My Lips” is a hard-thumping club track that flips the bird on old stereotypes of girls needing to wait on men to make the first move. “That way of living is tired and doesn’t work anymore,” says Lily. “If you see something you like, grab it. Sometimes, it’s the only way to get romance started.” Remixes of the track by Vjuan Allure, Richie Beretta, MikeQ x Divoli S’vere and B. Ames are on iTunes now.
“I liken the song’s message to a tiger going after its prey,” she says. “A tiger isn’t shy and doesn’t hesitate. In love and life, sometimes you’ve got to go 100%.”
Of Iranian descent, Cherie Lily was born and raised outside of Chicago. She launched her music career at 17, playing guitar for different punk and hardcore bands. At about the same time, she signed up for her first gym membership, sparking what would become a second love for her. “I am obsessed with fitness,” she admits. “When I work my body, I feel strong, confident, sexy and alive. I’m a true fitness enthusiast.” She regularly demonstrates the latest fitness trends on “PIX Morning News” in New York.
Lily moved to New York City in 2002, fronting downtown punk bands such as Spank, Skizonation (an all-girl group she was kicked out of because she didn’t have tattoos) and FLüRT. In 2005, she met the man that would become her husband, Andrew W.K., and joined his band as a female vocalist and hype woman. Meanwhile, she began producing her own dance music as a solo artist.
“I love nightlife and being a part of it,” she says. “I love rock too, but dance music makes me feel alive.”
Cherie Lily wrote all of the tracks on “The Dripping Wet EP,” and produced many of them too.
