Yuhua Hamasaki

Several years ago this sweet Asian boy showed up to compete for miss Long Island, unpainted, unwigged and undressed. We on Long Island were not familiar with him, and barely noticed his presence, as it was a very hectic night. Suddenly, out of nowhere appeared the most magnificent queen, adorned in glitter and beauty. She went on to win Entertainer of the Year, and the week after Miss Fire Island. Since then i have been lucky enough to be able to call her “friend.” She is truly a team player and an amazing Queen!

What have you been up to this past year, either drag wise or other?
Just working! I think it’s the Asian work ethics!

Why and where did you first do drag?
I was an outcast in high school, so I found my own environment by going out when I was 16 in drag so that I can get into the bars and clubs. That’s about it. Brief enough? Haha!

How is your life different from what you thought it would be like growing up?
When I was growing up, I wanted to do makeup, hair, act, sing, host. And somehow drag allowed me to combine all those elements together into one.

Are you excited about performing at the Get Out! Awards? Not to mention judging Miss Long Island?

Yes! I’m super excited about performing at the Get Out! Awards this year again, always a fun time! And of course, I’m also flattered to be judging Miss Long Island this year, what an honor! Not to mention I would be judging Miss Fire Island this year as well, and judged Miss Stonewall earlier this year. Kinda crazy that a few years ago I was just entering as a contestant, and here am a few years later helping to find the next queen!

Here are some fun questions. If you were a super hero what powers would you want?
Invisability! Go see hot guys in the showers!

If you were a porn star, what would your name be?
My porn star name would be Diamonds! It sounds shiny and expensive.

What’s your birth sign?
I’m a Pisces! That probably explains why I’m a pescetarian. Or should I say carnivorism?

You are probably one of the nicest queens in NYC. Do you think that’s a help or obstacle in your career?
I think being a nice queen is a help for me. I am easy to work with, personable, and I don’t get involved with drama. But that’s just part of how you channel it, because you have to be smart about it. You can be a nice queen or a bitchy queen, but in the end it’s how you use your brain.

Where do you want to be in 10 years?

In ten years, I want to be a cougar. Why not? I want to be old and sexy!

Anything you would like to promote?
You can catch me Tuesdays at 8:30 p.m. and Fridays at midnight in the West Village at Boots & Saddle, 76 Christopher Street; The Sunday Invasions at 11 p.m. at Stonewall, 53 Christopher Street; Lucky Cheng’s at our “pop-up” location at The DL, 95 Delancey Street; Fire Island; Long Island; Canal Street; Flushing; taking the 1 train; Subway sandwich shops; and “RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 56.
