Susan, front- lady of the Irish indie band, “Susie Blue”, has a voice like an angel. Aside from that the band does songs about social equality, and social injustices. They just released their newest single, “Be A Lady”, which focuses on the fact that it’s okay to be different. This follows their last single entitled “People Like Us”, which talks about the intolerance and hatred in our society, especially where homophobia is involved.
What was your motivation and inspiration for composing songs about social inequality and social injustice, besides the fact that’s it’s such a relevant topic today?
I think it’s important for young people to stand up for what they believe in and my music is my way of doing that. It’s always been important for me to say something with my music, it’s my release.
Susan you have a really haunting and fabulous voice, very reminiscent of the Cranberries. What are your musical influences?
I grew up listening to people like Sinead O’Connor and then when I got a bit older it was Joan Jett. Strong women are a big influence for me, in my writing and my performance.
Excuse me for sounding a bit challenging, and nosy, but I was wondering if you might be a gay based group, or gay advocates, and if so what is the gay scene like in Ireland? The other members of the band all identify as straight males, but they are 100% advocates for the LGBTQ+ community, we all support it and do as much as we can in our little part of the world. We live in the north of Ireland which currently doesn’t have marriage equality even though the UK and the Republic of Ireland both have those laws passed. We are fighting for equality and hopefully it will happen soon.
What does music mean to you personally?
Music is my everything, it’s all I want to do. I put everything into it, emotionally, physically and financially. Being an independent musician is very difficult.
What do you enjoy most about performing live?
I love performing and interacting with the crowd, seeing the crowd really connect and get into it as much as I am is what I enjoy most.
Any plans on visiting the US?
We would love the opportunity to come play in the US if given the opportunity. Would be an amazing gig!
How long have you been singing, and what made you decide to into the music industry?
I honestly can’t say how long as I’m told it’s before I even remember by my parents, but I was at school and I really wasn’t happy about anything I was studying and I honestly couldn’t see myself in a 9-5 career, the music industry is tough and really trying at times but I love it, the things most people would hate about being a musician I thrive on.
Any new projects on the horizon for 2017 and beyond?
Well the video for “Be A Lady” is coming in April and then new songs are in the works. More gigs and tour dates will be released for the summer as well.

What is the ultimate message that you are trying to bring forth through your music?
I’m just trying to be myself and show anyone who wants to listen that it’s okay to be yourself, I want to bring stereotypes out into the open and show how ridiculous they are, I also have songs that are just about my friends and fun, It’s honestly just me singing what’s in my head
