Who is Melania Sorte? Tell us how all started.
Melania is a Mexican goddess. [giggles] Melania dreamed about talent and beauty pageants within the Mexican LGBT community. I wanted to be crowned by the most prestigious event owners, promotors and judges, such as Carlos and Meche from Mexico City, and so I did! Those types of events involved many TV
personalities from TELEVISA MEX and members of our government as well. And that’s how I started my career with in the show business. I consider myself a naturalborn artist. I remember when I was a child I used to watch this very popular variety show on Sundays with my family called “Siempre En Domingo” (“Forever Sunday”), and I used to picture myself singing and dancing on that same stage. I believe this has been my destiny since I was born. I was born 3/2/74 at 1:30 a.m., and at that same time and date my uncle
was being crowned as the Miss Gay Universe ‘74 in Mexico City by Mrs. Xochitl aka Carolina de Monaco. Therefore, I believe that my talent is hereditary. For more information about my background you can always get in contact with Jorge Cruz, owner of SPARTACUS, the most influential gay club in Mexico City, and Carlos Meche, owner of the most prestigious gay beauty pageants in Mexico as well

What/who inspires your art?
This is a very interesting question, and I have a very interesting answer. I am my own art. My inspiration comes from my best friend, Loneliness, and our accomplice, my vision on stage.

You always have nice, elaborated productions and seem to really get into
character. Tell us about your artistic style.
It comes from my ancient roots, Mexican dance costumes with a Spanish influence. But I also adapt to other artistic forms of expression. I have impersonated everyone from Diana Ross to Adele, Rhianna, and Donna Summer.

What advice would you give to the new generation of performers who want
to be recognized and succeed in such a saturated market within the LGBT community?
This is a great time for our LGBT youth to exercise all the new laws that protect our rights and freedom; this should encourage them to be more active participants in our society and social activities. If their interest is performing as female impersonators, drag queens or whatever else, they should follow their instinct freely. No more hiding for us.

What is your pride message for your fans?
Don’t ever stop educating yourself. Education is power. Never stop fighting for equality and what’s right! This is the greatest country in the world, and we, the LGBT community, make it even greater! And you can catch my show at ELIXIR Lounge in Astoria, New York, every month! See you there!
