Mary Gauthier
Mary Gauthier is a country folk singer and songwriter originally from Louisiana who was nominated for the GLAAD Awards this year. She has eight records out and plays regularly at the Grand Ole’ Opry.
Congratulations on your GLAAD nomination, Mary.
It’s a category, and it’s a wonderful thing to be included in the award process, and I’m happy to be there. I’m not exactly sure how I got their attention, but thank them for me, would you?
I certainly will. I hope you win.
Well, you’re a dreamer, just like me. Thank you.
I love your song ,“Drag Queens in Limousines.”
Excellent. I do too; thank you. I’ve been a professional songwriter since the late ‘90s. I write songs, and I play them and sing them. I’m a troubadour. I travel solo. I’ve got eight records out. They keep me going. I started a little late in life. I had to put some demons to bed first and moved to Nashville when I was 40. I love Nashville. I play the Opry pretty regularly now.
Really?
Yep, five times in the last six months. I love being a part of this community, and I feel very comfortable here.
You’re also an author, correct?
Yeah, I write songs, short stories and I’m working on a book. I’m always trying to write something, so yeah. A writer is what I am.
Who inspired you musically?
Well, I’m drawn to great writers, so all types, everything from Tennessee Williams to Lucinda Williams to Hank Williams. A lot of great Williams out there. Have you heard my new album?
Yes, I have, and there’s nothing I want more than to put it out there for you.
It’s got me on the Opry. I’ve been able to move forward because of it. I feel as though it’s the best songs I’ve ever written. It has helped me reach a larger group of people around the world. I travel constantly to Europe, England, Australia and Canada – all over the world.
