You have a brand new song out, “Touch Me,” with adult TV pioneer Robin Byrd, which is currently on MTV Online. How did the collaboration come about?
I grew up watching Robin Byrd on TV (on the sneak tip, since I was only a teenager), and we became friends through our social circles in the NYC nightlife scene. Her manager/partner Shelly suggested that we should record something together, and of course I jumped at the chance. I’m extremely honored. We had a great, fun time in the studio, and her singing voice is ethereal. She can carry a tune! I wrote it, she added her Byrd flavor to it, and Infinite produced it.
Speaking of the producer Infinite, you both have a new record label! Congratulations! Is this easier than being signed to a label, or is it more difficult?
At this stage in the game, it’s basically the same thing. The only difference is that being signed to a well-known label, they have the finances to promote your song more
and book you on a promo tour. But let’s be honest, I was doing most of the leg work myself, even when I was signed to a label, so I figured, hey, why not just start
my own with somebody that I trust – my producer Infinite. So we merged our production companies into one, and it is Pathway Records/34 Whale Entertainment.
You have also branched out into producing adult films with the legendary Latino Fan Club. Do you think this will alienate some of your fans?
Oh, it definitely has alienated some of my supporters, but I have to stay true to myself, and therefore, if I find that my creativity can be expanded to other areas, then I have to go with my vibe. Incidentally, the first title that I co-produced with creator Brian Brennan – “Savage Urban Desires” – is already sold out, so I’d like to think that I’m doing something right!
You participated in a protest against a homophobic church in Harlem recently, which received national coverage. Any updates on that?
I have always let it be known about my faith in God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Therefore, when I see signs like “Jesus would stone homos” on so-called churches, then you know I am going to participate in a call to action. In this case, Jennifer Louise Lopez knocked on the church door, asked for her stoning, created the protest,
and now she will be joining me on stage during Queens Pride, along with Tamara Williams from “No Shade” and other special guests. I don’t want to give too much away, but it is going to be different from what I usually do.
I imagine that performing at Queens Pride is exciting for you because you were born and raised in Queens. Do you feel more at ease on stage since it is your hometown?
The opposite! I get very nervous because this is my hood and I want them to be proud of me. I went to Bayside High School and Queens borough Community College, and I want the kids there to say, “Lovari went here. Cool!” I don’t want them to say, “Lovari went here. We’re embarrassed.” Haha. I still remember walking around school wishing, hoping, praying to one day be on the cover of an album. I used to be so depressed and scared about how I would make it happen. So now, I have to keep making
it happen. I’m very grateful.
