Live Review: Grace Jones: WorldPride: Pride Island, June 29, 2019

Everyone has the fire, but only the champions know when to ignite the spark. Like an extravaganza of fireworks Grace Jones plunged into the night sky and shattered the darkness with a massive, sold out WorldPride vibrant, and colorful, audience of 1500. In an epic, life changing event superstar Grace Jones appeared flamboyantly costumed in a haunting black and gray, flowing apparel, mysteriously masked, powerfully present, and iconically phenomenal.

Singer, songwriter, supermodel, actress, and record producer Grace Jones, known for her out of the box sensationalism, and her distinctive, androgynous style. Born in Jamaica, her family moved to Syracuse New York where Jones began her modeling career which quickly led her to Paris and on the cover of magazines including Vogue and Elle. She then embarked on a music career which starred her at NY’s Studio 54. The award winning songstress, a true visionary,  had influences on many including Madonna and GaGa however at 71 years old she remains an anomaly.

A flawless selection to perform at the celebration of WorldPride NYC 2019 at Pride Island, Pier 97, Jones took the crowd on an unforgettable journey singing her popular mega hits with her salacious and tremendously inspiring vocals.  Each song was accompanied by a fascinating kaleidoscope of changes in fashion which made Cher seem amateur. Jones cascaded up and down steep stage built stairways and platforms, dancing with Hula Hoops, in spiked heels with a broken toe. At one point she made her way into the congregation’s mosh pit on each side of the venue. The fans remained in awe throughout the entire performance, jaws dropped, mouths opened wide. The singer’s eloquent presence, and vivacious attitude evoked a special memory in the hearts of all present.

A perfect and dazzling headliner for the largest gay event on the planet, Grace Jones left that stage leaving the crowd knowing that they had just experienced a the once in a life time event.  A special thank you to brother Chris Jones, a fabulous solo artist himself about to release his new album with TRAX Records, for back stage passes…..
