Ladies of Lips Twist Broadway
In celebration of last weekend’s Tony Awards, New York’s drag palace is reimagining the Great White Way as only it can, combining Broadway’s best tunes with unique drag spice!
On Wednesday, Lips presents its latest installment of Twisted Broadway.
Starring Ginger Snap and her fabulous choral ensemble, the show will feature hilarious queens performing showstoppers from Evita, Hairspray, Little Shop of Horrors, Mary Poppins, Annie, and more.
“This is no show for the kiddies,” warns Ginger Snap. “We showgirls are kicking up our heels and serving fierce Broadway like nothing that has been staged before!”
“The Tonys are always a special time of year at Lips,” says Yvonne Lame’, co-founder of NYC’s only true LaCage Drag Show. “We know what’s it like to put on a nightly show. The lights, the intricate staging, the make-up. Our performers probably use more make-up than all the other Broadway shows combined!”
From one small restaurant in the West Village, Lips has grown into a beloved nationwide chain. In addition to NYC, Lips has locations in Atlanta, Fort Lauderdale, San Diego and Chicago.
It all started when Yvonne Lame’ was inspired to create a Vegas-style dinner theatre that looked like the inside of a drag queen’s jewelry box. With the help of investors Michael Pacca, Paul Galluccio and Robert DeBenedictis, and shoe designer Brenda Starr, Lame’ designed the original eatery with bejeweled mirrors, crystal chandeliers, luxurious fabrics, a glittery stage and VIP cabanas. It quickly became a place for wild and crazy people to celebrate anything: birthdays, bachelorette parties, divorces, graduations, promotions, holidays and more.
The emphasis is always on fun. The performers are incredibly talented yet down to earth queens who have a desire to please their customers. Many have gone on to become international superstars, including season seven winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race Violet Chachki.
“We’ve won countless stage awards,” reflects Lame’. “In fact, about the only award we’ve yet to win is a Tony. Perhaps that will soon change with Twisted Broadway!”
Lips is located at 227 East 56th Street, NYC. For more information on Twisted Broadway, call 212.675.7710 or visit Lips’ website.
