WITH LAUNCH OF NEW DANCE LABEL, PROP D RECORDINGS
DJ AND REMIXING PRODUCER DYNAMO JOE GAUTHREAUX ADDS RECORD MOGUL AND ARTIST TO HIS RESUME WITH THE LAUNCH OF HIS OWN MUSIC LABEL, PROP D RECORDINGS. THE LABEL’S FIRST SINGLE, “BYE FELICIA,” IS AN EXPRESSION OF DISMISSAL MADE POPULAR BY NENE LEAKES ON BRAVO’S “THE REAL HO– USEWIVES OF ATLANTA.” IT IS A THROWBACK TO ‘90S HO– USE, FEATURING VOCALS BY MITCH AMTR@CK, BESTKNOWN FOR HIS RECORDINGS WITH LATE, GREAT, PETER RAUHOFER.
“I wanted a way to cut through the red tape and avoid third parties from interfering with my creativity,” says Gauthreaux on his decision to launch Prop D Recordings (the name is short for Proposition Dance). “It’s so easy to make music now, and quality music at that. Gotye created ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ all by himself in his basement. He inspired me to take my music into my own hands.”
Gauthreaux says he will unleash a diverse range of dance music through Prop D Recordings: everything from vocal, tribal house, EDM, to crazy club bangers. “I’m always incorporating new beats to keep the momentum up on my floor. I’ll do the same with the label. The worst thing a DJ or record head can do is get stuck in a certain sound for too long. Music is constantly changing and evolving.”
He’s already proven his willingness to adjust. The label was scheduled to release “All This Time,” a song Gauthreaux co-wrote with singer Jared Bradford, as its debut. But friends and colleagues convinced him to shelve it temporarily in favor of “Bye Felicia.” “I was outvoted,” Gauthreaux says.
On the street, “Bye Felicia” is a diss for “get out my face.” Gauthreaux’s track redefines the term, turning its negative connotation into a positive one. Instead of making Felicia someone no one wants around, he makes her a person being sought after. “I often try to do the opposite of what listeners are expecting,” he says. “That really defines everything I do. I always want to keep people guessing.”
JOE SPINS AT VIVA @ STAGE 48 ON SATURDAY, JUNE 28, DURING NYC PRIDE.
