Galen James

“Big Blue Mix Tape”

Galen James, talented singer, writer and producer, has provided his fans with a 20 track conglomeration of many of the songs he has visited in his career, entitled “Big Blue Mix Tape”. Celebrating jazz, R&B, blues and jazz pop fusion, Galen sings with the clarity of a heavenly angel, often using his vocals as an instrument.

Being born into a family who is no stranger to the arts, Galen, encouraged by his mom, began to sing at a very young age. Once accepted into the the prestigious music program at Western Michigan University, Galen  studied voice, guitar, piano, composition and arrangement. Then in 2009, he won 5 “Downbeat” awards, curtesy of Downbeat Magazine. Decidedly the honor reinforced his decision to dedicate his life and career to making great music. He began performing everywhere and singing with artists such as, Johnny Mathis, Johnny Mathis, Kurt Elling, and Chic Corea, all jazz legends.

gaylin-2-smallerAlthough Galen James enjoys his studio recordings,  he prefers singing live. Each and everyone of his concerts are unique, one of a kind, using different material for all. When recording this release he did so on analogue tape with the help of guitarist Doug Messenger, who is.Van Morrison’s guitarist. Before doing the album, he and Doug, rehearsed his band, Compendium, in order to ready them to record nine songs without the use of a single computer. The album was recorded meticulously and purposefully.

The songs range from jazz to jazz pop ballads to lighter hearted experiences. Clear as a bell, Galen projects pleasing melodious tones, which resonate with expression and passion, and emotion as though inside a glass cloud. My personal favorite, “Body Karate”, has a Mid- Eastern sound, sexy and jazzy, and crisp.

The album offers a great experience for those enjoying a relaxing evening  with a bottle of pinot Grigio,  a flaming fireplace, some good friends or a special friend in particular. It captures  a cozy closeness, warm feelings, tender moments and sensual emotions.
