Frostie’s Treats: The Penny Farthing

Football season is here! Gay sports fans, this one is for you. In the East Village just steps from Union Square there is a very sports enthusiastic bar/restaurant called The Penny Farthing. With five very large HDTVs, a bar full of spirits and a large variety of comfort food, you could almost live here if they didn’t have to close every night.

Frostie’s picks: Let’s start by establishing that we can still maintain class in a sports bar by ordering the Penny Martini. Made with Hendrick’s Gin, limeade and fresh-squeezed lemons, we can still keep our gay cards. Next it’s time to dig in and order the Shepard’s Pie with ground beef, fresh veggies, topped off with mashed potatoes. My favorite part about the Shepard’s Pie, beside how great it tastes, is the visible steam that comes from the skillet it is served in to let you know it just came from the oven.

When ready for dessert you may not be able to focus if your favorite football team is not doing so well. It may be tough to make decisions like what desert to have. Penny Farthing is very straight up, with only three desserts to choose from:  cheesecake, apple pie a la mode and chocolate cake. Each one is absolutely delicious, so just ask the waiter to surprise you.

If you’re looking for a quiet evening, this is not the place to go. But if you’re ready to root on your favorite sports team and eat great food, then head on over to this amazing establishment.
