What is better thAn being in a room full of glamorous people, each more fabulous than the next? Absolutely nothing, especially when all are so supportive of one another’s careers. Be a part of the no-drama magic when some of the leading queens of drag converge at Drama Book Shop to celebrate the re-release of dr.a.g. Maddelynn Hatter and Joey Arias will be among those on hand Wednesday, October 8, from 6-8 p.m., along with a slew of club kids, fashionistas, Ryan Caldwell (Professor of Gender Studies), Rob Lebow (The Gorgeous Project) and Christopher Logan, the author of the definitive photo book on drag. We sat down with Christopher Logan to discuss the evening.
Is Facebook discriminating against drag queens?
I don’t understand why legal names are necessary. Hopefully, by drag artists galvanizing and showing themselves to have numbers and sway, the situation will warrant exception.
Why do queens deserve to be celebrated?
Artists that develop, inspire and push us past our limits with their ferocious fearlessness deserve our respect and thanks.
What inspired you to create dr.a.g.?
I had written a film on drag and was looking for an interesting way to raise funds. What began as a fundraiser became one of the most positive and uplifting books on drag.
Who would you say has done the most to advance drag?
I don’t think I could choose one performer, because so many have encouraged advances in different ways. I do believe reality television has had a great hand in furthering the love of drag to the masses.
Was there a queen you had to have in dra.g.?
Lady Bunny. When she agreed to be included in dr.a.g., it added credibility to the project and influenced other icons to become involved.
What image in the book best represents the current reality of drag?
The cover shot of Jeffree Star by photographer Austin Young evokes the possibility of what drag can be. It has movement and life yet is incredibly simple at heart.
What is it about Nina Flowers that makes her such a stand out?
Nina embraces deep colors and rich textures. She’s bold and dances on the edge with a grand respect for fashion and the classic.
Is the evening at Drama Book Shop open to all?
Yes, it is for all who love glamour, drag and want to celebrate the art.
