On Saturday, September 5, for the 12th year in a row, Six Flags opens the fabulous amusement park for Fairgrounds: Out At Night, courtesy of Mark Nelson and Chris Wright. This is the biggest LGBT private party in the nation, and this year it will be open until 2 a.m. Get Out! was able to get some information from promoter Chris Wright about the party and the special guests.
Where are you from originally, and how did you meet Mark?
I’m originally from South Jersey, just right outside Philly. I met Mark by way of Six Flags. What started as a small group of friends heading to the park resulted in talks to make it private, and the rest is history.
What inspired you to start promoting?
Since I was a kid, I always liked to throw parties and put on a show. It’s never been about money for me, but a sense of achievement. I never thought I’d have a party with 10,000+ people.
How do you prepare for an event like Gay Six Flags?
You would think after 12 years it would get easier, but it’s a big event that requires months of planning. But I like finding new ways to promote and get creative with it.
Will you be enjoying the rides?
I’ll spend the majority of my time at will call, but will sneak away for at least one ride and cheese fries. El Toro is my favorite.
Can you remind us of the line up for this year of entertainers and DJs?
Headlining this year is Grammy-nominated remixer/producer Dave Aude along with house DJ and pop artist Ultra Nate, who’s back from Ibiza, and I can’t wait to hear her play. Since we have two stages this year, Steve Sidewalk, Joey Z and Kimani G will be kicking things off at the pre-party.
Do you have any idea how many will attend this year?
It’s hard to give you a number, but based on advanced sales, it’s going to be a great night.
How does this differ from your average circuit party?
Fairgrounds is different in so many ways. We cater to everyone. And since this party ends your summer, it’s OK to eat. Put your Tic Tac pack away and get yourself a funnel cake.
Anything else that you care to add or promote for yourself?
I just wrapped up a party at Paradise in Asbury Park called DIP. It was a great turn out and will be coming back next year for sure. I have a few day parties in Philly coming this fall and the return of the Big Chill Ski Weekend in the Poconos, which is a blast!
