Mary Lambert is an enchanting and openly gay songstress, songwriter, poet, spoken word artist and gay rights activist who is about to unveil her latest release on October 14 called “Heart On My Sleeve” via Capital Records.
Lambert is known for being the featured singer and songwriter of Macklemore’s and Ryan Lewis’ gay rights single “Same Love.” Mary wrote the chorus’ hook, which is believed to have stemmed from her experiences as a lesbian growing up with a Christian upbringing in Seattle.
In “Heart on My Sleeve,” Mary uses her angelic tones and constant runs to express heartfelt messages drawn from her life’s experiences. Her debut single from the album, “Secrets,” is an upbeat tune enfolding some of her very own dark secrets in a unique, light-hearted and humorous fashion, allowing one to identify with at least one of those very secrets. “When You Sleep,” the next single off the album, is a precious love ballad, gently portrayed with huge sensitivity and brilliance. “I could make you happy. I could make you love me. I could disappear completely.” This sets the lyrics of the chorus, which is composed in a way that makes one want to sing along over and again. My personal favorite is her own rendition of “Jessie’s Girl,” originally done by Rick Springfield. Her haunting intensity and wonderful artistry gives the song a brand new life.
Lambert has said that this was the best year of her life. She was signed by a major record label, she went through a breakup, met the woman of her dreams and figured out how to be an independent person. She enjoys having the opportunity to sing about gay rights!
