Barracuda, the multi-award winning gay bar and New York’s premiere venue for drag artists, has launched the New Year by showcasing some of the hottest drag talent New York City has to offer. Beginning Monday, January 21, and taking place every Monday following for eight weeks, Barracuda will present 70-minute productions featuring a diverse cast of finely tuned, polished and glamorous drag performers – all for free! Headlining talent will include Kittenwithawhip, Thorgy Thor, Brenda Darling, Sable Scities, Charmin Ultra, Madison Maddox and Ginger Snap. Each show will also feature numerous guest performers. Performances begin promptly at midnight.
“NY DRAGFEST 2013 will highlight the next generation of drag queens along with some established queens who do not have a viable stage to showcase their talent,” Barracuda owner Bob Pontarelli says. “This will be a fantastic opportunity to experience first hand the wide array of talented ladies that New York nightlife has to offer.”
Barracuda was created in 1996 and quickly changed the face of Chelsea nightlife forever. Promoting a “downtown” sensibility and edgy sexuality, Barracuda was unique to the then-burgeoning neighborhood. Barracuda has played host to literally thousands of drag performers, along with celebrated stars from Broadway, television and film. It has also enjoyed a nationwide reputation for presenting countless offbeat personalities such as Tonya Harding, Charo, Tura Santana and Tammy Faye.
Since that time Barracuda has become the most-honored bar in New York City, consistently receiving Best Bar awards by countless guidebooks and magazines including New York Magazine, NY Press and HX Magazine. It has been the subject of a feature-length stories in The New York Times and the New York Daily News and can regularly be found on Page Six and in the NY Intelligencer column. In addition to the headliners, NY DRAGFEST 2013 will also feature special surprise guests every week.
