Another Present to Celebrate Chinese New Year

Ms. Cheng, a fabulous queen and fashion designer, has created costumes for Lady Gaga, Carrie Underwood and others, and her work has been featured on the covers of “Elle” and “Cosmopolitan” as well.

What were the circumstances that led you to begin doing drag, and how long have you been at it?
I started doing drag because I was always inspired by women’s beauty, accessories, shoes and clothes. I had an exhibition in Taiwan inspired by drag where I was photographed in my own designs in drag wearing them. That led to my drag taking over, and I continued in it in New York after I moved here!

When you’re not doing drag, what are you doing?
When not in drag, I have the pleasure of making costumes and outfits for other people. Or lying on my bed thinking what is wrong with my life.

Yuhua told us that you’ve had some affiliation with Gaga and other celebrities. How so?
I’ve been doing costumes and designs for many years, and it was a pleasure to be featured with various celebrities, magazine covers and concerts. It is an honor to finally see my work blossom. More of my work can be seen on my Instagram
@ChengHuaiChuang.

How do you celebrate Chinese New Year?
My family are all overseas; therefore, I’m going to send them a copy of this magazine as a gift for the New Year, since my face is on the cover!

What is your favorite aspect of drag?
Since my boy look kind of failed on society, I know that I can have a second chance of looking good as a human being when in drag.

Are you working on any future projects that you would like to announce?
Finding an American citizen that would marry me and give me a green card. It’s quite a project!

If could give your younger self advice, what would it be?
Never skip your English classes.

Is there anything that I haven’t asked that you would like to tell?
I’m gay.
