Sandra Bernhard

‘Feel The Bernhard’

The fabulously funny, sensationally sarcastic and hilariously hashtagable humorist Sandra Bernhard is back around town for the holidays and New Year’s Eve at her usual residency at Joe’s Pub in the heart of New York City. She will be there from Saturday, December 26, to Thursday, December 31, ringing in 2016 in a sensational way!

Bernhard continues to tour, selling out nearly every venue  throughout the U.S. that she visits with her own unique and refreshing outspokenness, her own brand of insight and a blend of cabaret, stand-up and of course a taste of her band The Flawless Zircons. She has also become a well-known radio personality (sirius.com/radioandy). You can catch “Sandyland” every day from Monday to Friday at noon Eastern Time, part of “Radio Andy” with Andy Cohen.

This year Bernhard says she has derived some of her material via her radio show, and promises humor, stand-up and some rock ‘n’ roll. I was able to speak with her about her upcoming live performances at Joe’s Pub as well as some of her latest projects.

So you are all over the place now!
I am all over the place – busy, busy, busy! Busy is good.

You will be back at Joe’s Pub. I saw the show last year, and it was awesome. So what can fans expect at this year’s live and intimate performance?
It’s all-new material, and a lot of it was generated from doing the radio show. Some of my great issues have been really kind of brilliant when I do my improvisational opening – keeping notes, keeping track of everything. We’ve put some of that into crazy, funny personal stories that had happened over the past year: some topical stuff, some commentary about where we are at culturally, and of course I will have my band there, The Flawless Zircons. The music will be rocking. It’s fun to know that year to year I’m able to put together new material. It’s no easy feat. I’m happy with what I’ve got going. I’m really excited about it.

And you write all of your own material?
Oh, yeah. I always write my own material.

So where do you get all of this brand-new material?
Just from my source. That’s what I do. Writers write and think and stay connected to what they are experiencing, and turn it into whatever it ends up being, whether it’s funny or moving or off beat or personal. That’s what you do as a writer. You capture it and write it.

Do you have upcoming projects on the horizon?
Yeah, I’m suppose to go back and do some more episodes of Brooklyn 99. That’s supposed to happen in January. I’m continuing to work on scripted projects, so when they’re ready to hear pitches, I’ll go out to L.A. and pitch some of these ideas. I’m also filming an episode of “Difficult People,” the show that Julie Klausner is writing, and I’ll be doing that next week, for their new season.

Nice.
I know! So I am in it to win it.

Sounds like you are winning.
I am, and I am really enjoying it. I’m just trying to pace myself and do everything right. That’s a quality that I love.

Tickets for Feel The Bernhard at Joe’s Pub (located in The Public Theater, 425 Lafayette St., New York, NY 10003) can be obtained through Ticketmaster.
