DJ Nacho Chapado

The hottest ticket in town features one of the most sought-after and desired DJs in the entire world, DJ Nacho Chapado, who will be arriving in New York City on Sunday, July 19, to perform at Sunrise, the Alegria daytime event at Hudson Terrace. The event goes from 5:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nacho will play the first half followed by DJ Eddie Elias.

Nacho can be found at the largest and most popular international circuit parties including ones in Madrid, Tokyo, China, Brazil and the USA. Not only is he one of the most monumental DJs today, but he is also a flawless producer for the past 15 years with his own label, Guareber Recordings.

I was privileged to have been able to reach him at his home in Barcelona and found him to be extremely fun and very animated with an extraordinary passion and love for music.

How long have you been a DJ?
I’ve been a DJ for 10 years officially. It’s different for me, because I was a producer before I was a DJ. I’ve been a producer for 15 years. In the beginning I was doing music that was popular on radio stations, and the people wanted to know who the person behind the music was. Finally the people around me told me to become a DJ, play my music and play the music of other producers, so I turned my career into DJing also. But in the beginning, at first, I was a producer.

That’s a little different. It’s usually the other way around.
Yes, this is not the usual. Other people start DJing, and then they produce music. I think it was special for me because I was taking care of music. I love music. I’m very fond of the music of the ‘80s and ‘90s. I use my experience with music to play in my DJ sets.

So you travel the world and perform at huge parties? What is the biggest party you have done?
The biggest party I played at? I play a lot of parties in Brazil, in Europe and, three months ago, at the White Party in Palm Springs. That was amazing. The people there…amazing.  I play a lot of big parties around the world.  I play in the most popular gay parties in the world.

So you will be coming to New York July 19?
Yeah, I’m very excited to play at Alegria SUNRISE. I love NYC. It’s such a special place, and I have friends there. When I’m in New York I feel so comfortable. I don’t feel strange. It’s different when I go to other places around the world. I stay in the hotel, and I prefer to keep to myself, but when I’m in New York I go out. I love walking the streets and seeing the people, going to restaurants. It’s very nice to be there.

How long will you be in New York?
I can only spend one day. I will spend all day doing things in New York. After I relax I will play at SUNRISE. When I finish I will shower and go to the airport, because I must be in Barcelona to finish some productions and remixes. I must work in the studio.

And you live in Barcelona?
Yes, I live in Barcelona. Have you been in Barcelona?

No, I haven’t.
You must come to Barcelona. You will love it.

Definitely.
Especially now in the summer. You have the beach, and it’s nice, and the city is crazy. You will see when you come.

What kind of music do you like to play?
I use different kinds of music, but I play tribal house music. All the tracks I play in my DJ set I retouch in my studio. I take the songs played on the radio, and I totally change and retouch them. I put a new element, percussion, new rhythms. Every sound I play in my set is totally different from other DJs. If not my music, it’s music from other producers, but I retouch the music in my studio. It’s very energetic.

What do you like best about DJing?
The people are great always, and traveling around the world, like China, Brazil and Europe.  The different kinds of personalities around the world: I love that. As I told you before, to work with music is very important. I’ve been working with music since the beginning of my life. I love music. The thing that I don’t like is that I travel a lot, and sometimes you need time to be calm and be with your family, with my friends. I don’t have enough time to be with them. Also, I don’t like to wait at airports a lot of the time. But the rest is great, and I love this job. I love DJing, and I love music.

Is there anything else that you’d like to say or tell us about?
I only want to add that besides being a DJ I’m doing a lot of productions of official remixes. I have my own label called Guareber Recordings. The DJ now is not only a DJ. He must have a label, and he must be a producer. It’s not easy; it’s very complicated. He must work on a lot of things. I’m doing a lot of remixes. I have my own label with my partner Ivan Gomez, and we are working on tribal house tracks.
